2.5 stars. I wanted to like this book. I really did. And on the surface, it has so many of the elements I love in an engrossing read: a literay mystery, family secrets, beautiful prose, an historical setting. But it was just s o l o n g. There were too many plots and the narrative was maddeningly slow. Nothing happened for pages and pages. Although everything does come together in the last 150 pages or so, the hundreds of pages leading up to it had made me so ready to be finished with the book that I barely cared. Even the "big reveal" at the end took f o r e v e r to unfold. I breathed a sigh of relief when I was done with this one.

Great science fiction with an amazing concept and a great cliffhanger ending. Unfortunately the sequal was very dissapointing for me.
