I am not sure why I loved this book so much. Maybe it is because everyone craves the intensity of friendship which Narcissus and Goldmund have, but seldom is it achieved. Maybe there is a bit of wanderlust in me and reading of the roamer satisfies that urge to explore the world. Maybe it is because Hesse can put me in a scene with a minimum of adjectives describing the flora and fauna. Maybe it is the subtle portrayal of the age old good versus evil theme which raises some of the same questions I have. Or maybe it is simply the wonderful performance by Simon Vance in the audio version of this book. He could read the phone book to me and I would enjoy it.

Jack Vance has better command of of the English language and its possibilities than any other author I've ever known. Of all his books, this series is my favorite: 1) Lyonesse 2) The Green Pearl 3) Madouc
