I read this for the first time as an adult starting yesterday, which so happened to be Steinbeck's birthday. I was just compelled to read it and glad I did. This story has become such a part of the American psyche that it was like a deja vu experience. Steinbeck is a master craftsman of the American version of the English language; every word in this book seems thought out and necessary. The dialog is crackling and tells much of the story before Steinbeck' effective, almost detached narration settles in. A beautiful book about a sad subject without moral grandstanding. I sit now in awe, contemplating what I just read. That rarely happens anymore.
