I positively LOVE these books. I've read all of them several times. So well-written; I feel as if I've been to the Yorkshire Dales and met all these dear people. They make me laugh and cry. These books are the perfect combination of detailed character development and captivating accounts about animals of all kinds. How I loved reading about so many dear animals...and people... from the pen of one who loves them so much. James Herriot is a consummate storyteller. In "The Lord God Made Them All", Herriot regales us with the tale of a piano recital in which his son Jimmy performed at the age of nine. After several tries and several failures to recall the second half of his piece, Jimmy returned to his seat. "A wave of misery enveloped me,and though many of the other parents turned and directed sickly smiles of sympathy and friendship at Helen and me, it didn't help." Then, to James' horror, Jimmy was invited to try one more time. "From a great distance I heard Miss Livingstone again, 'Jimmy will play 'The Miller's Dance'.' She didn't have to tell us - we all knew. As though in the middle of a bad dream, I resumed my seat. ...I began a series of long, shuddering breaths designed to carry me past the moment that was fast approaching. Because I knew he would stop again. And I knew just as surely that when he did I would topple senseless to the floor." The first time I read this, I nearly did that exact thing from laughter. :)
