I think I missed the boat. I haven't read Specimen Days by Walt Whitman, and I probably should have before reading this. (The way you should read Jane Eyre before you read The Eyre Affair.) It was very strange to begin with, but by the end of the book I really liked it. It's three stories that are connected, although they take place in three completely different time periods. Beautifully written.
