This coming of age story is about a young Irish woman, Eilis Lacey, who immigrates to Brooklyn post WWII. With little hope of a bright future in Ireland, her sister, Rose, enlists the assistance of an Irish Priest, visiting from his parish in Brooklyn, who sponsors Eilis in America. He sets her future in motion by securing her an apartment in an Irish boarding house and a job in a downtown Brooklyn department store. While in America, Eilis finds love. On a return trip to Ireland, she has to make a life altering decision. Her story gently unfolds and takes the reader on an eloquent journey with little drama. The book flows nicely from one event to the next while we watch a young woman take her place in the world through insight and experience. This is a fine piece of literature, not your average run of the mill novel.
