A romance hid under orientalism-in-action drivel. Progressive west vs. Savage Asia. "Oh, the milky white European bosom. Oh! Oh!" "We Muslims kill at the will of Allah." Oh, sucka. At times, could produce racially driven Ali and Nino porn.
** spoiler alert ** I loved this book. I devoured it in one sitting (okay, maybe 2- a girl's gotta sleep). The characters were magnetic and even the background characters were filled with spark and personality. The setting in the future was eerie and it scares me to think that could really be the future of mankind. Wither was a chilling, creepy and elegant book that had me flipping through 5, 8 chapters at atime before I got up to pee or eat something. It was amazing. Rhine was a main character you root for no matter what she does and is one of those rare few who question whether or not their actions are really what they want or even right. I loved her and Gabriel's relationship, also. The way in smoothly transitioned from a loose alliance to friendship to love was beautiful. I also loved the twists- they were around every corner- and how the bad guys, no matter what you think at first, always have at least a tiny bit of good in them (ex. Linden actually being outrageously ignorant to the point that it was scary, and even Vaughn because he did it all for his son.) I also thought that the fact that every charcater also had a bad side was very compelling (ex. Cecily being sweet then mean,Jenna being open then extremely secretive,Rose being nice to Rhine then mean to the attendents). Not to mention how every character (EXCEPT FOR VAUGHN) finds a way to redeem themselves in the end! This was wonderful book that defied my expectations completely. I wouldn't call Wither poetic but very sentence, every word had meaning or set you up for yet another surprise (ex. the sound when Gabriel and Rhine kissed, seemed like Vaughn but then you find out it was actually Cecily!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!) I am anxiously awaiting the next installment!!!!!!!!!! XD <3
The third of the Power of Five series, takes us on a journey with the third and fourth gatekeepers, telepathic twins, Jamie and Scott Tyler. The story gets seriously complicated, and it is up to the reader to keep up, with three worlds to read about within this book, nothing will seem ovbious at first, but slowly the jigsaw puzzle starts fitting together, and only then does the reader become entranced, and know that the series is far from over. That we are possibly in for, two or three great more books. This book finally clashes with the modern day and ancient worlds. It will leave you thinking...that there could be a possibility, that all this, might be actually happening in our own world...and why not?....let's read book four....
