No one does big-concept far-future hard SF quite like Reynolds, and I love him more with every book I read by him. This one has the flavor of court intrigue thrown in, which I greatly enjoyed. Plus there's big alien artifacts, actual aliens, mysterious purposes - how can you go wrong?
Right so it was a really good book but I finished it at like midnight and actually had to drink a bunch of bourbon just to get myself past the ending and able to sleep.
I love children's books that are timeless. Books that are relevant and interesting to children of all ages, no matter when they were written and published. Animal Tails is one of those books. Originally written and published in Japan, this book begins each page by showing the tail and hindquarters of an animal, and asking a child to guess what it animal it belongs to. On the next page, we learn it animal's identity, as well as the function of its tail: "This is a Spider Monkey. He uses hi tail like an extra hand. He can pick fruit with it, or use it to swing from branch to branch. It is a very useful tail." The illustrations are well-done, and the wording is simple enough for young children, yet advanced enough to convey enough information. This book would be appropriate for any child from early-preschool through children reading on their own, about 3rd grade.
