this one was inspiring. it gives multiple accounts of children in the holocaust, not only involved but also those who were affected by it indirectly. it showed me that everyone deals with war differently. some rise to the occasion, some don't.
Peter Hoeg creates such a kick ass heroine it makes you immediately want to jump in the ring and start boxing away. Smilla has a fierce maternal instinct that propels her on a mission to unravel the mysterious death of a child she loved NO MATTER WHAT coupled with near superhuman strength and stamina to survive the journey. Hoeg also takes advantage of every physical detail-- whether it's the smell of spices during morning tea, Danish cake in a fancy cafe or the various textures of ice and snow to illustrate characters or deliver bullets of cultural commentary. Smilla's voice cuts through with first-hand narration that is so blunt and decisive you will never forget her.
