This book has a characteristic that has made other John Irving books such as, "A Widow for One Year" and "Till I Find You" some of my favorites. This book starts with a boy and his father and follows them throughout their lives. I like seeing plot progress in this way and getting to know the relationships between the characters. I do agree with some other reviews of this book-it could have used some better editing. I didn't like the way it jumped around and there were never any real surprises because it was already given away in an earlier paragraph. I can appreciate that the main character in the book is the same type of writer that Irving is. The business with finding the first line (at the end of the book) started to feel a little contrived, though. Overall, an entertaining read with characters that I grew to love and relate to. Despite it's length, I'd say it's a good summer read.

I loved the the first half of this book. I found the narrative to be compelling, the characters to be fascinating, and the setting to provide the perfect atmosphere for this tale of lost love and murder. That being said I didn't enjoy the second half of the book told from Aaron's perspective. It is well worth slogging through to get to the end, however, I would have enjoyed it much more if I could have seen the entire novel through Krista's eyes.
