This was one of my favorite books as a child. It was read over and over again so much by both myself and my sisters that the spine fell off! The last time I read this book I was about 12 or 13 and since then have revisited the story in the form of the film so when I reread the book recently I tried to look at it with a critical eye as if for the first time but enjoyed it just as much as I had in the past. I would recommend this book for Year 5 and 6 children however I remember reading it in Year 3 or 4 so perhaps my ability to judge appropriate age ranges is off! Girls who find the modern Jaqueline Wilson type book enjoyable may find it interesting to read a girls books that was considered "modern" in its day but is now a bit dated. Certain readers may find the pace slow and some of the content preachy but many will also identify with one or all of the girls and find a special place for this book in their hearts.
