So you say to yourself, "Wow, I really haven't read much about the parts of the world most deeply affected by the US right now-- but I really don't want to read a news report. I want a good story in a new setting. Well-written. Where do I start?" Here. The Kite Runner is fantastically gripping and a great introduction to Afghanistan (note-- Introduction!! You can't learn everything about one place from a single book, of course). Mostly, though, it's just a great story. Transcends this cultural moment and is simply a good book. Humanizes a part of the world that doesn't often get enough of that from us over here in the Western world.
This book was a great beach read! The blurb on the back of the book doesn't do it justice. I enjoyed the characters and frequently found myself laughing out loud over something the main character said or thought. If you're looking for a light mystery this one is perfect for you. Don't miss Face Time, same author. Hank Phillippi Ryan did two signings at Willow Books and Cafe while I was the events coordinator-- she is wonderful! You should read her books.
