My understanding of Chabon's text is based on a mishearing of Mat Devine singing, "I'll be big tonight." (see Kill Hannah "Kennedy") This is a book about all kinds of bigness. Bigness (defined as the state of being big) is first and foremost very attractive. Therefore this is an attractive volume full of wonder and caveats, but like all caviar, bigness goes stale and staring is discouraged (see Pomerance, Bernard Elephant Man 1979). Like Chabon's protagonist, I've made many beautiful friends in college. Reading Mysteries I learned just how lucky I was to escape their gorgeousness unscathed.
