THE FAERYS VIEW A Beautiful Dark by Jocelyn Davies was good---and then it wasn’t, I know confusing, right? I really did like the book, I truly did but the beginning was very slow. I’m glad I stuck with it but I almost didn’t despite my eagerness to read this book. The characters in A Beautiful Dark are somewhat wishy-washy and a bit immature even the ones who are supposed to be ‘guiding’ our protagonist, Skye. Skye isn’t really anything that special aside from being pretty, she isn’t exceptionally smart or good and it kind of remains that way throughout the book. There are two mysterious guys, both vying for Skye’s attention and both as different as night and day. We have the typical ‘love triangle’ which isn’t supposed to be in the cards and is basically forbidden making it all that much more yummy. Our triangle hotties-who just happen to be angels, Asher and Devin, are fighting a war-one on the side of The Rebellions and one on the side of The Order. They tell Skye she has powers she must learn to control but it’s never very clear to Skye or the reader until the ending what exactly the war is about and it makes it difficult for Skye to decide which side of the war she stands on. There are times when Skye acts like a brat but she pony’s up towards the end, the boys Asher and Devon are also alternately lovey-dovey to jerks on a stick, again, making it difficult to really know where we stand. Towards the end though, things seem to take a turn for the mature and gave me faith that their behavior was based on many factors. With that being said, I still really liked the book. Despite it being a slow starter, it redeems itself about 150 pages in with action, romance, mystery and thrills. This is the first book in a series and I’m looking forward to the next installment now that all the ground work is set.
