I saw Ackerman speak-- he's an interesting guy. Even better than the book is the companion documentary. Although I don't identify as catagorically pacifist, both the book and the film do a wonderful job of radicalizing nonviolence, and illustrating joy in revolution. Bust it up, ya'll.
This is my favorite of all of Heyer's books -- I've now re-read it twice since I read it last summer and it has not yet lost its charm. A really enjoyable book, and quite different from today's regency romances. Written over half a century ago, the prose and writing style seems much more faithful to the era in which the book takes place than more modern versions. Yes, this is a romance, but in the most traditional sense of the word -- there is a lot of relationship building and comic interludes. I gobbled this book down in a day, on the heels of The Grand Sophy, which was my first introduction to Heyer and which was also excellent. But Frederica, the heroine of this book, seemed much more credible than did Sophy. I had never heard of Georgette Heyer until very recently and didn't realize until I started her books that they were written so long ago -- they have held up very well with age and -- from what I have read thus far -- are such fun reads.
Sang Ye is the pre-eminent oral historian working in China today. This is a great selection of his work. (Disclosure: I translated several of them.) There is a range here that you won't find anywhere else. And yet this book (and Sang Ye's work in general) has never achieved the attention it really deserves.
