Maitland just gets better and better. This is a fabulous read, with a tightly woven plot and a great array of characters. It's brutal and horrific in the extreme-but not gratuitosuly so. The characters are well depicted, with many of them showing compassion which contrasts with the life of the times, and the appalling attitudes of the lords of the manor. It's left very open ended, so am hoping with all my heart we will be seeing a sequel soon-it could even run to a series, there is so much potential left unexplored. 10/10 for this magnificent achievement.

do not read this back to back with extremely loud and incredibly close. a foer-fest is not fun.
