Currently re-reading after seeing Pelzer speak at a fundraising event. I was so grateful for the opportunity to tell him how I have witnessed this book work therapeutic wonders with kids who've experienced abuse. The kids are able to empathize and identify with Pelzer and vicariously empathize with their own abuse, tapping into the emotions that need to be experienced for healing. Very exciting stuff. And I found it reassuring that Pelzer was odd. He did strange impersonations, didn't always make sense and was just a bit off...but he's okay, he is self-accepting and a survivor. It's the true survivor who takes adversity, owns it and integrates it to make a whole person, much greater than the sum of one's parts. A great resource and I would definitely recommend seeing Pelzer speak if you get the opportunity. He helped reinforce the need to set high expectations for all kids to succeed and thrive.
