This is a compelling and disturbing book. Once you get into the rhythm of the folk type dialect you are taken into a world of sexual violence, horror, love and sacrifice. I wish I had been able to read a book like this when I was 14. I would have found some comfort from it. I've read several different reviews online regarding this book and the explicit violence depicted and directed at young adults. Some have been rather unfavourable and condemning. It makes me shudder at the small mindedness of such people. Children are not glass, they thirst to understand. It's only our adult prejudices that stop them or teach them to fear. Personally I find nothing wrong with a 14 or 13 year old reading this book. Young Adult fiction offers a way teenagers can identify with issues they face and like it or not – Sexual Abuse is high on that list. I love this book, it's real and confronting, I would have no issue encouraging my daughter or even son to read it. It's beautiful.
