This is a tough one for me to review, as I'm not sure I really "liked" the book, but rather was intrigued by it. I had a hard time really getting into it, but the unusual and clever subject matter had me wanting to know what happened next and ultimately how the book would end. Mr. Chartwell's dry sense of humor was also good for a few chuckles. I completely agree with the review of a friend who said it's best to not know too much about this book before you read it. Mr. Chartwell's secret is revealed soon enough; knowing it ahead of time is sure to lessen the impact of the first several chapters.

As a teen I read 'Love Story' by Erich Segal many, many times. It's a short book, easy to read, and, in my opinion, is one of the great love stories of the twentieth century. I identified with Oliver and Jenny, the main characters in the book. I also enjoyed the movie adapted from this book. As a mother of teens my feelings toward the book and it's characters changed for a while. At that time I identified more closely with the parents. Now that my children are safely past this age I again find myself enjoying the love story, the romance, and the innocence these characters share in their belief that cliches are true, true love will triumph. "Love means never having to say you're sorry" was the cliche that was the tag line for the book and the movie, as they found out, that is untrue.
