What a moving story! I love reading books about this time in history. I can't imagine living through the horrors that they did. This story was beautifully told.

Looking for an action packed adventure? Then Fablehaven by Brandon Mull is the book for you. There are many great elements of Fablehaven. It’s a wonderful book despite a few imperfections. Some of the great elements include the detail, the climax, the ending, and the humor involved. With the many outstanding components, Fablehaven also has a few flaws, which includes some of the dialog, and a few not so exciting parts. Fablehaven would not be as good if it weren’t for the few bad things. The few flaws that Fablehaven does have, only makes this wonderful book stronger. I would like to start off with all the great components of Fablehaven. The first thing that makes this book great is by the detail. Here is an example of a short paragraph when one of the main characters Seth discovers a cruel witch behind forest walls. “Beside the stump, dressed in crude rags, sat a wiry old woman gnawing at a knot in a bristly rope. Shriveled with age, she clutched the rope in bony hands with knobby knuckles. Her long, white hair was matted and had a sickly yellowish tint. She was missing teeth.” Mull could have just written “The witch was in the cave” yet, he went to every last detail to make sure we had an image of her in our minds and that we were transported to that very place. Ernest Hemingway once said, “Details make the story human, the more human a story, the better.” There is amazing detail throughout this entire book. The smallest details play a huge role in making this book great. The second thing that makes Fablehaven a great book is the dynamic characters. Kendra and Seth are the caretakers’ grandchildren. These two characters act as opposing forces to each other. This interaction between the two keeps the book exciting and the reader engaged. Kendra is the smart, quiet type. She is very obedient and fears getting into trouble. She keeps to herself and doesn’t have many friends. Seth on the other hand, is a daredevil. He gets bad grades and has lots of friends. Instead of fearing and avoiding trouble, Seth seeks it out. Because Seth and Kendra are opposites, they tend to balance each other out. This dynamic creates a sense of unity that filters down to the other characters throughout the book. Another component that aids in making Fablehaven a wonderful book is that it has the ability to keep your heart in the story! Fablehaven holds the interest of the reader. The story captures an interest that will grow with the turning of the pages and, quite possibly, mourn the passing of the last. “Seth jumped off the bed. Crouching, he scooped up two handfuls from the circle of salt and charged the wiry goblin. Now holding the chicken in one hand, the sneering goblin rushed to meet him. An instant before the outstretched hand of the demon reached him; Seth flung a handful of salt. Releasing the chicken locks the demon reeled back, scorched by a blinding blaze” In just that little paragraph from this majestic book, the reader becomes mesmerized. That is what Fablehaven does. One more component (out of the unlimited) that makes Fablehaven a great book is the humor involved. One of the main Characters Seth is funny and sarcastic, which makes the book all the better. When meeting with the evil witch named Muriel, Seth was quite the jokester. The following is how the conversation went; “You happened upon me by accident?” “Actually, I’m selling candy bars for my soccer team. It’s a good cause.” She stared at him. “I have my best luck in rich neighborhoods.” As you can see, Seth is a pretty funny kid and it makes Fablehaven an even greater book than it already is! Humor is the key to literature. Since we have been talking a lot about all the good components of Fablehaven, I believe it’s time to start talking about the bad. One of the crappier things in Fablehaven is the dialog. For example after Seth, in utter hysterics , is attacked by raging angry fairies and turned into an unrecognizable mutant walrus (who cannot even speak for that matter) Kendra goes up to Seth and says to the mutant version of her brother “Are you okay?” Come on now, if that happened in real life would you really go up and ask someone if they were merely okay? I am surprised Seth’s answer wasn’t “Yeah, never been better!” after Kendra made it sound so light. Even though there are minor hiccups in Fablehaven, it’s still one of the best books out there. One more minor negative aspect of Fablehaven is that it starts out slow in the beginning. For example, the whole first chapter of the book is dedicated to the telling about how Seth and Kendra are on a long journey down a boring road. When they finally get to their destination, their reward is a delicious bowl of Cream of Wheat. This is the highlight of the chapter. I feel like Mull could have condensed that part of the book instead of taking up an entire chapter. Once the reader is through the first boring chapter, the story starts to evolve and take shape. The reader is suddenly drawn into the story and may find it hard to put the book down. In closing, all the components that make a great book are implemented in Fablehaven. It had exciting details, relatable characters, intense moments, and just the right amount of humor. This is a book which will isolate the reader from the real world. The pace is sometimes fast and sometimes it is slow but the reader is always engaged. Fablehaven transports the reader on and an exciting and thought provoking journey that leaves her wanting more. William Styron once stated; “A good book should leave you slightly exhausted at the end. You live several lives while reading it.” This is the kind of book that makes the reader mourn when finished with the tale. Brandon Mull is such an amazing story teller the reader is left wanting the story to continue. All in all, Fablehaven is one of my favorite books of all time and I would recommend it to anyone. Like the very beginning of Fablehaven says, none who enter this book will leave unchanged.
