This book kept me reading. I wasn't a big fan of the storytelling style. It was told from the perspective of several different characters and each time you switched characters, the story would essentially "start over" based on their experience. While each one's story was certainly interesting, I was getting really impatient to find out what happens. The ending was kind of lame and seemed more like an easy way of ending the story, as opposed to making it interesting.

Love, Love, Love A.S Byatt. This is definitely one of her best. I've read everything she's written, and this is certainly a top pick. The thing I love about her most is her ability to create a strong atmosphere. It's always one of constant discovery, wonder, beauty, and sometimes disgust, but in a good way. She always leaves me inspired. The Children's Book is full of so many characters and so many personal histories, it's tricky to keep up initially, but as you weave through their stories, they become like family members they're so well known to the reader. Like many of Byatt's books, it's full of history, very detailed imagery, and immense amount of research detailing even the tiniest details. I learned more about trench warfare, the Arts and Crafts movement, German puppetry, the Victoria and Albert Museum, and even ceramic production (of which I already know much). All of this research made me feel as though I were also a character living in that time, experiencing what may have been like. The book is constructed linearly through time, but the details of each person's life and the interests they follow is constructed cyclically. Each person, each subject of interest (be it German puppetry or children's stories) is told as the character is experiencing it. Every description is so vivid and carefully thought out. This is a book to read again and again. Each reading would likely be different as it's so dense your own personal experience would change it.
